Modernization of a Monforts five-chamber stenter

Working at a customer's premises, Industrielle System Technik (IST) modernized the electrical and pneumatic control system of a Monforts 5-chamber textile stenter.
The plant's electrical control panel, which dates back to 1991, was upgraded to make it fit for Industry 4.0.
Before:
The existing Monforts control panel and its DC drive systems were replaced by a control panel built by IST, featuring the latest PLC and frequency converter technology.
After:
Work performed
The control panel was removed. All existing wiring was removed from the cable ducts and disposed of. The existing DC geared motors for fabric transport were removed and replaced by new three-phase asynchronous geared motors. Geared motors with absolute encoders were installed for the width adjustment. The existing magnetoresistive potentiometers were replaced by IST inclinometers (INKL 1.0) whose outputs are read directly into the PLC. The existing burner control systems were rebuilt to current safety standards and integrated into the plant control system (safety PLC).
Operator guidance was improved by installation of a new control tower with a 19" touch panel at the entry to the Monforts stenter and a new control console with a 15" touch panel at the stenter exit.
To make the machine operator’s task easier, a camera was also installed at the plant exit and a monitor in the operating tower.
New cabling was laid and connected for all electrical ancillaries.
A new IST mobile centre winder was fitted at the plant exit.
Commissioning of the complete Monforts stenter progressed smoothly, as the control panel and all its electrical hardware components, including motors, touch panels, control enclosures, etc., had already been tested in advance at IST.
The installation is displayed in its entirety graphically in a fabric flow diagram and in individual images on the 19" touch panel. For the fabric transport drives, a user interface was implemented on which all set values are selected and the actual values displayed. Assembly and commissioning were completed within only five weeks of production downtime.
